Zedtopia Chapter 34: Blitzkrieg

Slide the bed back till the metal frame locks against the back wall. Crouch low, fingertips on the floor. One knee up, one down. Locked in the starting block. Dog at the gate. Horse with no rider. The crack before the thunder.

Rifle held by the forearm. Staring into the void. Every muscle tense.

Waiting.

The mother is screaming. “Grayson! Come back! Grayson! GRAYSON!”

Those shrill notes at the top of the scream that disintegrate into desperation. Shatter into panic. Racing past sanity and logic and thought and feeling. Just the roar. Bellowing into the black.

Count it down. Come on, kid. Five, four, three, two… one.

Nothing.

The door is still shut. The Professor is talking to me. Talking to her. Talking. Talking. Talking.

Five, four, three, two… goddamn it.

Fucking kid. He’s fucked. He’s gone. He’s out there and there’s no…

Door springs. Pops open and moves but only an inch. She’s blocking the fucking thing. Crumpled and crying and screaming. Clawing her way into the cell. Killing us all with her hysteria. I yell so loud I swear I taste blood. “MOVE!”

She recoils just enough. The door to the cell slides free. I go. Hard and fast and gritting teeth . Pure fucking purpose with a head full of hell.

The pain in my ribs burns away. The exhaustion and fatigue, absent. Everything that was tense unwinds into motion. High steps over wide strides. Head down into the darkness with the rifle leading butt first. Crossing the shadowless corridor at speed. On towards the light.

The reflection of something moving to my right. White shine on the blue of a barrel. Just a flash. The smallest betrayal. I swing the AK up and out like a bludgeon, aim level from the shoulder out, connecting at full power. Something beneath skin breaks on the other end.

Running through. Stopping for nothing. Just to the left an orange flash and the roar of a shot at point blank. Another and another and another. I can feel the concussion of each shot but nothing touches me. Moving too fast. Too fast and too dark. Flip the AK to full auto and let it rip behind me as I turn. Feet moving forward and lead flying behind. Shooting blind at belly height. Just over where a child’s head might be.

Turn the corner. The smell of powder in the air. More shots from up ahead. Little fireworks igniting in the distance. Concrete sprays my face where the bullet bites the blocks. Duck down and zigzag hard. Have to get out of this hallway.

A room to my right, door open. Hit the ground in a slide and scramble through the doorway. Kick it shut behind me and back pedal hard. Under a counter or desk. Feel for the bolt on the rifle. Still closed. Not locked open. Must have at least one round left.

Hold my breath. But something keeps breathing.

“Grayson?” Eyes searching wildly around me. If it’s not the kid…

He whispers close to me. “I told you I knowed how to open the doors.
